Sweetwater is a community located in western Eagle County Colorado, including parts of Garfield County that serve as the gateway to the Flat Tops. The now abandoned Sweetwater railroad station is located in Eagle County, approximately 8 miles north of I-70, along the Union Pacific Railroad at the intersection of the Colorado River and the River Road, at the Roundup River Ranch. Sweetwater originated in the early 1900's as a center of commerce for ranching operations, primarily the shipment of cattle. The settlement had major corrals, scales, and a railroad siding. The railroad stop was used until the 1970s. The corrals, siding, and train stop have since been removed, but the foundation for the scales remains. The area has always been popular for recreation and hunting. Read more about our history and get the source maps.
